Ask Dudley:  What is a Goldendoodle?

What is the difference between an F1 & an F1b and a MultiGen?

webassets/puppypaw.jpgThe mini F1 Goldendoodle is a cross between a mini male Poodle and a female Golden Retriever.  Both are retrieving dogs with the willingness to please.  Great temperament, and very loyal to their family. They adore people and love to romp and play with the children and other pets, as well as curl up on the couch beside you.   Coats range from wavy to slightly curly.  Some coats are more coarse than others, while most are very soft and fleecy.  The length of the coat varies between 4 - 6 inches, and can be kept cut short if desired.  The F1 Goldendoodle is good for people with mild allergies, with very minimal shedding, and low dander.

webassets/puppypaw.jpgThe mini F1b is a cross between a standard Goldendoodle or a mini Goldendoodle to a mini Poodle. This if referred to as a cross back, with 1/4 more poodle than the F1.  This breed is non shedding with little to no dander.  This doesn't mean however the puppies will look more like a poodle than the F1.  The coat will still range somewhere between curly to flat and wavy.  The coat of the F1b will be non-shedding with little to no dander, & always beautiful.

webassets/puppypaw.jpgThe TRUE F1b mini is a cross between a mini Goldendoodle and a mini Poodle.  The mature weight will range between 15 - 25 lbs.

webassets/puppypaw.jpgMulti-gen: What does "Multi-gen" mean?  Multi-generational puppies are from two Goldendoodle parents.  They could be f1, f1b or multi-gen, or a combination of two.  It just means that the parents are more consistent in size (at least with my breeding program since I only have minis), and the coats will all be non-shed and hypoallergenic.  Some puppies will have tighter-waved coats and some will have the looser, slightly-waved coats.  Even within the same litter there will be different coat types.  So, don't get too hung up on f1b versus multi-gen.  They are really about the same.  You should pick based on the size, coat type, and temperament.

webassets/puppypaw.jpgThe F1 coat is much less shedding than the Golden Retriever. With minimal care the F1coat will be low shed and low dander. The F1b coat will be little to no shed and hypoallergenic.  Great for people with allergies!!

webassets/puppypaw.jpgMini Goldendoodles make great pets or service dogs for those with allergies or for anyone just wanting a smaller indoor dog that is easy to care for.  They are good natured dogs, with playful, loving and easygoing personalities.  Their mature weight will vary, between 20 to 30 lbs.  And stand between 13 to 18 inches, depending on the body build.  They are nice sturdy little dogs and are great with children.

webassets/puppypaw.jpgBreeders have found that by mixing these two  breeds, the offspring are not as likely to acquire genetically transmitted diseases, such as hip dysplasia & cataracts.

So whatever mix you want in a Goldendoodle, rest assured , you are getting the most amazing breed of dog available today.

I have found a great book on Goldendoodles by author Kathryn Lee, this little book is a must read for anyone planning to purchase a puppy, or for those who already have one of these amazing little dogs.

And also a great read on learning how to train your puppy with a kind and loving hand is THE LOVED DOG by Tamar Geller.  I highly recommend this book.
